Capital ideas: London must-dos for teenagers

Everybody knows teenagers can be difficult; especially when it comes to finding something that truly engages them when you go away on a family holiday. Well, if you’re planning on visiting London anytime soon, don’t fear; the UK capital is blessed with an abundance of attractions that will more than appeal to your adolescents…

Do it for free!

Contrary to popular belief, there’s a lot to get up to in London for free – not least for teenagers. A few things that may appeal to them include a trip to the Apple Store on Regent Street where they can play and fiddle about with the latest iPhones, iPads and laptops to their hearts’ content or they can discover a wall of chocolate (yes, really) at Leicester Square’s M&M’s World, check out a panorama of the city 150 metres above ground-level in The City’s Sky Garden or what about visiting Richmond Park and catching sight of one of the 650 resident deer?

Take to the air!

Fancy scaling the outside of one of the capital’s most iconic buildings? Who wouldn’t! Walking along the roof of the entertainment venue formerly known as the Millennium Dome, thanks to the ‘Up at the O2’ attraction, is a must-do; in fact, it’s like it arrived in London for teenagers! You can also ride a cable car on the nearby Emirates Air Line and, should your money stretch far enough, you can really spoil the kids by letting them travel like a rock star (and/ or an adventure movie hero) thanks to a helicopter tour of the city – quite frankly, it’d be a fitting excursion for anyone staying at luxury suites London.

Get the adrenaline pumping!

And if your teenaged rascals are truly adventurous then you and they can take to the Thames on a speedboat tour (one of which, suitably enough, has a James Bond itinerary) or take to a zip-wire between woodland tree-tops at Go Ape Battersea. And if that sounds like fun then why not descend one of the most recognisable sights of the 2012 London Summer Olympics, the ArcelorMittal Orbit sculpture, which has been transformed into a pacey super-slide!

London

Shop like there’s no tomorrow!

Finally, what adolescent doesn’t love to shop? If you all could do with a spot of retail therapy after your other exploits, then you must make the trip to Westfield Stratford City (one of Europe’s biggest and most gleaming shopping malls – it even has a cinema and a casino!) and to the trendy, vibrant West End shopping stretch made famous in the Swinging Sixties, Carnaby Street, of course. Then there’s the opportunity to look around the nation’s grandest department stores in the shape of Knightsbridge’s Harrods and Oxford Street’s John Lewis and Selfridges, or how about popping along to East London’s pop-up shipping container-based retail hub that’s Boxpark?
